Lebron Is Wrong, The NBA Should Not Retire Number 23
I’m going to throw my two cents in.
The NBA should not retire Michael Jordan’s number. Don’t get me wrong, Michael was the best player to ever play the game. That does not garner a retirement of a number across the board. Bill Russell won more championships. Babe Ruth single handedly changed a sport and saved it at the same time. Wayne Gretzky dominated his sport more than Jordan (not to mention broke more records). And I would say no to those numbers being retired.
Not to mention Lebron’s comments that today’s stars would not be here without Michael. I think he is wrong there also. Before Michael there was Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. They brought the NBA back to life. That rivalry captured a nation. The way they played made the NBA exciting to watch. Let’s also not forget that Dr. J was flying way before Air Jordan did.
Finally I think to retire Jordan’s number would be a slap in the face of Jackie Robinson. Major League Baseball retired Jackie’s number becuase of what he stood for. How he changed the game for African Americans and for the better. He was a great player but his numbers weren’t the greatest. But what he accomplished on life’s stage can never be touched.
